Legislative Priority – Redistricting Reform 2026
LWVNM supports a redistricting process and standards that provide the people with a meaningful choice in electing their representatives and facilitate holding government accountable.
LWVNM supports:SM1 Request that Congress Set Standards for Congressional Redistricting Sen. Figueroa
What would SM1 do? This memorial urge the United States congress to pass legislation to require uniform redistricting criteria and uniform process standards for the United States House of Representatives apportionment and to prohibit states from midcycle redistricting unless court-ordered.
Why we need SM1: Partisan gerrymandering disenfranchises voters by undermining the fundamental premise of one person, one vote and infringing on a voter's first amendment right to associate freely and fourteenth amendment right to equal protection of the laws under the United States constitution.
The 2025 acts of midcycle redistricting increased partisan divisions, and additional acts of midcycle redistricting are predicted in 2026, which will worsen political polarization further.
Requiring states to use uniform redistricting criteria is an appropriate and important exercise of that congressional authority.
SM__ Asks the Legislative Council to Create Redistricting Task Force Sen. Figueroa
What would SM__ do: If passed, it would request that the Legislative Council create a Redistricting Task Force to recommend procedures and legislation to guide redistricting for state offices following the 2030 Census. The Task Force would include legislative appointments along with others. The majority of the Task Force would be from the public.
Why we need SM___: The 2021 Redistricting Act improved the existing redistricting process, especially public engagement. But the composition of the Citizens Redistricting Committee created by the Redistricting Act was not representative of the demographic and geographic diversity of New Mexico and Citizen Redistricting Committee maps had advisory status only and were not binding.
